Sal Esposito, A Family Cat, Summoned To Jury Duty

If you are wondering why Massachusetts resident, Sal Esposito, looks like a typical scaredy cat it is because Sal has been summoned for jury duty!

Fortunately for Sal, his owners think of him as a member of the family and made it official when they checked "cat" on the Census Report but the court system thought "cat" meant "human" and unfortunately Sal will be a member of the jury on March 23, 2011.

Of course, Sal's human, Anna, thought Sal should be disqualified from the service requirement on the grounds that he is "unable to speak and understand English." She even included a letter from her vet explaining that Sal is not a human being but a "domestic short-haired neutered feline," WHDH reported.

But the jury commissioner denied the request because "the law is the law" and Sal should not receive any special favors because of his status. I wonder if the judge will be disappointed or amused when Sal lets out a "Meow" or two during the trial?

What would you do if you were Sal? Would you break the law and not report for duty? Or would you put your well groomed paws forward and be the best juror pawsible? Put yourself in Sal's paws for just a minute, please, and give Sal some advice. I'm sure he doesn't want to make the decision to appear (or not appear) in court on his own!

  1. LOL!!! I'm at work so I can't view the clip but I think this story is so funny!! I cannot believe poor Sal is still required to do jury duty even if it's proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he'd much rather watch bird tv and chase leaves!! Awwww poor Sal!! I hope the law sees some sense soon!! Take care

  7. We saw that on the news here in Oz and we're still laughing!

Hope he doesn't have to sit in on a dog case. Surely they'd dismiss him on a case like that! BOL!

  10. Hello To My New Friends,
I am so glad that my story is making headlines because I have had no one to talk to (other than my humans) about my situation! I cannot believe that a human would DEMAND that I go to trial but I have to face the facts...some humans are just plain stupid, right?
I will take your advice and go to jury duty and I will have a good time there too!
    xoxo...Sal Esposito
