What Trees Mean To A Coonhound Named Daisy

When Daisy was a puppy, she was supposed to learn how to "tree" a coon while out in the woods of North Carolina with her previous owner but Daisy preferred to tree squirrels instead. Her previous owner was frustrated with her lack of treeing skills so one day he left her in the woods to fend for herself. She never saw her owner or her little sister again, poor thing!

While it was very sad that she was abandoned, I am proud of  Daisy for having no interest in terrorizing raccoons.

However, I do not appreciate it when she lunges towards trees to terrorize squirrels because I know what is going to happen next!

She is going to bark very, very loudly and she will also attempt to climb a tree! Don't think a dog can climb a tree? Watch the video below to see that treeing walker coon hounds really do live up to their reputation!

Trust me, if Daisy does climb to the highest limb I will capture the moment on video and share it with you! In the meantime, for the sake of those poor squirrels, I hope she keeps her paws on the ground where they belong!

My Lab would have never even thought about climbing...he'd get to the base of the tree and look forlorn that yet ANOTHER evil squirrel got away.

  18. Hi April,
Well the video wasn't there but I know what you mean b/c Bambi does it too!!! She use to run probably 3 feet up the tree and she cought a few too!! She would brake there neck in a heart beat! At least they didn't suffer!!
Your blog is now user friendly!!! Yay Yay
She use to chase the coons too but I finally got it across to her that they are part of the family and now she pays no attention to them. I am having a hard time conconvincing the coons she will not hurt them tho !!!
It is easy to get too much on a blog, I am on dial up and it gets real mad at me when I do....
