9 Ways to Keep Your Dog From Being Spooked This Halloween

Halloween does not have to be scary for pets if you follow these 9 safety tips:

1. If you have a dog that barks at the sound of the doorbell disconnect it or wait for trick-or-treaters at the door so that they do not have to ring or knock.

2. Since many dogs don't enjoy costumes consider purchasing a bandana or festive collar instead!

3. Always make sure your dog is wearing his collar with current identification.

If for any reason your dog escapes and becomes lost, current tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver increasing the chances that he or she will be returned to you.

4. Take your dog for a long walk before trick-or-treat time begins to ensure he'll be too tired to become anxious when visitors arrive at your door.

5. Put your dog in a crate or in a room where he feels safe and then turn on classical music or animal-friendly television shows to drown out the noise of the activity at the front door.

6. Give your dog a treat-filled Kong or a bone to keep him or her distracted and occupied throughout the night.

7. Keep your pets away from Halloween candy and decorations!

8. Do not walk your dogs when Halloween festivities are scheduled.

Costumes can scare dogs and even normally docile animals can bite in defense of themselves at an unfamiliar "thing" reaching for them even if that thing is your friend the dog knows well.

9. If you will not be home consider placing a sign over the doorbell that reads something like this: "Anxious dogs are inside! Please do not ring our bell or knock on the door. We are sorry but we don't have any candy!"
