What Does Rainbow Bridge Mean To You & Your Pets?

A pet sitting client of ours recently asked me what I thought the afterlife was like for pets because she been concerned about her aging collie's health and just wanted to be prepared for the inevitable. Because of you,  dear bloggers, I've learned more about Rainbow Bridge than I could have learned from books, lectures, or movies and I thank you for helping me find the words to comfort my client when she needed them most.

During our conversation I was not so sure she appreciated that most my Rainbow Bridge expertise came from a place called Blogville but as I continued talking she became less skeptical and more attentive because my description of Rainbow Bridge was so poignant and comforting for her.

I explained that  Rainbow Bridge is a beautiful bridge that her dog Rocky will cross over when he dies and while on the bridge he will be restored to full health and vitality for all eternity. My client loved learning that when her time comes she will reunite with Rocky at the Bridge and they will remain together forever.

While the idea of Rainbow Bridge seems a bit over the top (no pun intended) I choose to believe in it because even though this place seems fictional it is one that makes me feel comforted because, as a pet sitter, pet lover, and pet owner, I need a fairy tale to get me through each horrible loss.

What about you, dear readers? What does Rainbow Bridge mean to you and pets? Do you really believe pets go to Rainbow Bridge when they die? If not, what happens to pets when they die?

  1. Oh I do believe all animals go to the rainbow bridge when they die. Why not?!?! Let them have a place without fear, illness and threat of extinction! On a personal level, I'd truly like the thought of my kitties past all happy together somewhere waiting for me!

    Take care

  2. Funny thing. I personally don't believe in the afterlife, but I find the Rainbow Bridge a comforting thought. It helps us to think of our dogs at their best; running, jumping, playing, and living life to its fullest. I know that with all the dogs I have helped on their final journey, it has been a peaceful moment when I can feel their essence leaving their bodies. If only we could be so kind to humans.

  4. I do believe that animals do go to heaven just like people do but I also believe in reincarnation. I believe animals will be born again in a different body & maybe as a different animal too. Whether or not the Rainbow Bridge actually exists, I do think it's comforting to think of our pets going to a beautiful, happy, colourful, peaceful place when their time comes.

  5. I'm not so sure what I believe but I would like to think that someday I will see my pets again. One of my dogs Jake was creamated and sits on my Dad's fireplace mantle. Many people ask about his urn and I introduce them to Jake. Many people think it is strange for us to have him there so close but for us it helps to know he is close by still. I plan to have the rest of mine cremated when they pass on and perhaps have a special spot for them too.

  7. It is a wonderful metaphor that helps me deal with the many pets who have crossed over. I do believe our pets wind up in heaven. The rainbow bridge is a great way to think about it happening.

  8. Oh, I believe in the bridge... and I know when it's Corbin's time, he will be very excited to be reunited with all of the tennis balls he's killed :o) I think the bridge makes it a little easier and a little more comforting. Wouldn't you rather know you gave them that last nudge to be free? Makes it easier than dealing with the end.

  10. I do believe there is a special place that our beloved pets go when they pass from this life. And I do believe that we will be reunited with them when our time comes. :)

  11. I belive their is a special place where our pets go and wait for us when it's our time. I believe the Rainbow Bridge is real just like I believe in Heaven. I always think that I will be reuinted one day with all of my lost pets from the past and right now, they are running around with other pets and my mother, grandparents and all the people I have lost are with them. Lots of love, Debbie & Holly

  12. As a Christian, I certainly believe in Heaven, and have been learning about some strong arguments concerning pets being in Heaven. What a comfort to know they will be there, and have specific jobs. You can look around and see how important animals are to the Creator.

  13. We believe in the Rainbow Bridge because all the animals we know definitely have souls.

But Dear Abby once said when asked if pets went to heaven, "I don't know, but I hope not because there are a lot of goldfish waiting for me!"

Sort of like the Gary Larsen cartoon, with chickens waiting on the Pearly Gates for Colonel Sanders.

  15. The Rainbow Bridge has to be real, and for sure it is a place that our humans need to have in their hearts so that they can better deal with the loss. It brings great comfort and solace to those left behind. We loved your post.

  16. I am a child of God, my belief is in Heaven.

Through the blogs, I heard about the Rainbow Bridge and , as you explained, pets cross the bridge on the way to their next journey. On the bridge they become younger, are healthy, feel no pain, then they cross over the bridge and play with other animals and wait for their loved ones.

The story brings me comfort and peace knowing our fur babies are waiting on the other side for us..in a glorious meadow filled with flowers , brilliant colors that we have not seen and butterflies with wings of glitter.

  18. @Benny and Lily - I forgot to mention the other important pawts of Rainbow Bridge --- treats & no dogs that bite!
@Shawn - I am a child of God too and I believe there is a heaven and hell for all but never heard about Rainbow Bridge until I started blogging and even though the Bridge seems like a fairy tale I believe in it because I believe all souls go to heaven and in my opinion, all animals have souls!
@Op Pack - I agree with you! Humans do need a lot of comfort when their best friends leave them!
@Scotsmad - I never thought that the chickens would be waiting at the Pearly Gates for Colonel Sanders but now I SEE THE LIGHT!
@Attie Cattie - Please don't cry too much, my furends! You will not need tissues at the Rainbow Bridge! I pawmise!

  20. I believe all living things live on as a spirit after the body dies. In this way, the rainbow bridge is not literal, but metaphorical for me. Once the spirit is freed from the body, it can run and soar and be free and young again. I also believe that our loved ones - whether furry or non furry - live on in our hearts.

  21. I agree with Mango Momma. While I don't believe in an afterlife, I find the idea of the Rainbow Bridge very comforting, especially the idea of happy, healthy doggies. There's a great children's book called "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant which follows a similar theme with great illistrations. While it's a kid's book, adults find it very comforting as well.

  22. Mommy says she likes to believe that all of her previous pets are reunited with her family up in heaven. She would love for them to all be together. I think that sounds like a nice thing to believe. :)

  23. We are more of the reincarnation believers. Our pets may chose to come back to us in a similar or different form.

  26. We think that the rainbow bridge is as you described it. We have two friends who lost pets last year and they didn't know about the bridge so we sent them the poem and they really said it made them feel a bit better, to think they will get to see them again, and we feel the same way.

  27. Sorry I missed this post. I too like to think of Rainbow Bridge as somewhere my loved pets will be waiting for me, fictional or not it helps me cope with losing what becomes one of the family for us all. xxx

  32. Well, if we're totally honest, we don't really feel like we know what exactly happens to anyone - pets, humans or whatever - when this life is over. What we figure is that it doesn't hurt to try to believe in a kind of best case scenario, so that's what we choose to believe. Whatever gets you through the night, right?

  33. My Jack just died, so I wish I knew what happens. John Edward, the medium, has mentioned dogs being with the people who have passed, so I hope that is what happens.
