I'd like to share a story about a chocolate lab named Zoey who lives a short distance from me in Eliot, Maine, who was shot in the mouth with a shotgun because I find it remarkable that she is recuperating despite the odds. On January 9th, Zoey was let out by her mother to go to the bathroom. Approximately 30 minutes later she returned bleeding profusely from her face.
Remarkably she made it home on her own with a bloody trail left behind in the snow. Her blood-splattered tracks with occasional wide-dark pools of blood where she collapsed is a reminder of her strength and determination to live.
Her prognosis is fairly good but she has a long road ahead. The hospital is working very hard to save her tongue that was almost destroyed by the shot as seen in the x-ray. She is on a feeding tube during this process and adjusting well. The process will be slow and arduous. The outpouring of love and support from near and far has been heart-warming.
