The Dangers of Marrow Bones

'

What is stuck on the jaw of this poor dog, you ask? It's a marrow bone that are found in your grocer's freezer that got hollowed out when this dog chewed the marrow inside to look like

this leaving plenty of room for her to get her jaw stuck inside and then had to have the bone surgically removed with a wire saw at the veterinarian's office!

To view how this bone was removed from a dog named Dottie please view this video:  https://youtu.be/GU4PkqCGuv4 and then follow it up with Dottie's story here:  https://www.aspca.org/news/bone-pick-one-dog-learns-dangers-marrow-bones!

To bring this story home, I'll refer back to when my dog, Daisy, got her bone stuck on her jaw several years ago and it was removed almost immediately at the vet's  office!

The best bet when giving your dog a marrow bone is to (a) purchase ones that are larger than your dog's jaw (b) monitor your dog (c) don't allow your dog to chew for long periods of time.

While marrow bones are rich in calcium and are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals they could potentially get stuck on your dog's jaw so the best thing to do once the marrow has been chewed out of the center is to DISCARD IT. In addition, the bone becomes brittle and could potentially break a tooth or splinter into dangerous pieces that could obstruct organs causing serious if not fatal harm.

I hope this blog post serves as a friendly warning to be very careful when giving your dog a marrow bone!

Daisy's Bone Has Been Picked: Part Two

Hello Ladies and Gents, I'm Daisy Lindahl. You know I had a bone to pick last night so now you're going to hear ... the rest of the story...

My humans drove me to a place I couldn't wait to get to...the V-E-T-S office...and as soon as my dad found a parking space I couldn't wait to get in that office! My dad's arm was practically pulled out of its socket but I didn't care! My vet had a bone to pick and I was ready for her help! See how serious I am? And speaking of "See", can you see that mean 'ol bone under my nose?

And here I am watching my dad sign my life away write his name on a piece of paper where he had to promise to not blame the vet if anything goes wrong during minor surgery!

Excuse me, dad? mom? Vet lady? I don't think my problem is minor at all! This is a MAJOR problem! And did I hear the vet say that something could go wrong and that my dad can't blame you fur it? What the dog?

And here's proof that nothing went wrong at all! The vet lady used a crowbar bolt cutters to get the bone off but I didn't feel a thing! In fact, I was sleeping and dreaming about all of my furends the whole time!

Thank you, vet lady, for making me look less ridiculous in less than 2 hours! Don't I look prettier without a mean 'ol bone glued stuck on my face? It should because it was a $300.00 makeover!

Daisy Has A Bone To Pick!

I guess Isabella and I have a lot in common because this afternoon I didn't want to look at anyone but I did not have the case of the worry wrinkles. No siree! Instead, I got myself in a bit of a jam and I was so embarrassed! Can you see what is attached to my lower jaw?

Couldn't see it? Well, here's a closer look for you to admire gasp at! That's right, folks, I took my marrow bone chewing a little too seriously and it is stuck! I tried to get the darned thing off me but I can't get the bone over my teeths!

If you think I look scared you should see hear my humans now! They are super worried about me and that's why I am seeing my V-E-T in just a few minutes! Wish me luck!

P.S. Take it from me, don't ever chew on marrow bones without your humans present or you will have a bone to pick!

Wish me luck! Daisy
