The first thought that popped into my head when I heard that today is National Pet Day was that I think every day is a day to celebrate pets much like Mother's Day should not be the only time to recognize that moms need a break from household duties by being treated to a lovely dinner at their favorite restaurant.
The other thought I had was of all of the pets who have been abandoned at local shelters and how just a small donation of $5.00 a month would help support animals in need.
If you can't donate, please think about what supplies you could bring to the shelter such as towels, blankets, bowls, and food.
Another great way to give back to the community is to volunteer your time at the shelter whether it is to walk dogs, assist in fundraising events, or by spreading the word about pets who are in dire need of adoption.
I hope this post encourages you to not only treat your pet to a long walk, a big hug, a special treat, etc, but also serves to remind you to think about helping the lonely and scared pets who are waiting at the shelter for someone to love and protect them.
