Millie Barks Herself Out Of Storage Unit and Takes A Bite Out Of Crime

Normally I am not one to cut and paste an entire article from the newspaper but when I read this article from our local paper, The Union Leader, I was completely irate and out of time to post any further original thoughts because I had to get to my pet sitting duties. My apologies to the author of this painful-to-read article but I couldn't help myself!

If you are as distrubed as I am by Millie's plight then do me (and Millie) a favor by clicking on the Union Leader link (above) and leave a comment. I am sure little Millie would appreciate your support!

Here's the article....

EPPING – Little Millie appeared to be enjoying herself as she bounced around a pen outside a local animal shelter yesterday.

The environment was much different from the one police found her in last week when they responded to a report of a dog barking inside a unit at an Epping storage facility.

Millie, a 1 1/2-year-old terrier mix, was found sitting in a small cage inside the darkened unit at Epping Storage Place on Route 125. It wasn't a personal item that one would expect to find inside a rented storage unit.

Moments after she was found, Millie was seized by police and the Derry man who was supposed to be dog-sitting was charged with animal cruelty.

Justin Vose, 26, of 23 Fairway Drive, Apt. 3723, faces a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals after police said he placed her inside the unit and left her with no food or water.

Police Sgt. Jason Newman said police were called to the storage facility directly across from State Police Troop A around 4 p.m. on Oct. 7 to investigate reports from other renters who had heard a dog barking constantly while they were there.

With assistance from the storage facility's owner, police were able to open the door to the unit."The dog appeared to be in distress," Newman said.

While Millie wasn't injured, Newman said she was left with no food or water inside the unit without lighting and was placed inside a cage that appeared too small.

"Our concern was, although it was a small dog, the kennel it was being held in was extremely small and the dog really couldn't even move," Newman said.

There was also no way to regulate the temperature of the unit, Newman said.

The owners of Epping Storage Place do not allow renters to store animals in their units, and they had no idea that the dog was there until other customers reported Millie's barks, Newman said.

It appeared that Millie had been inside the unit for at least a day or more, Newman said.

Millie was brought to the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals where she remained in custody yesterday.

Newman said the dog belonged to Vose's friend and that he was caring for her. He wasn't allowed to have pets at his residence so he placed Millie in the storage unit, which was being rented by the friend, Newman said.

Newman declined to identify the friend because the individual was not facing charges.

Vose, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 5 in Exeter District Court.

What do you have to say about Millie, Millie's owner, or Justin Vose? Let's bark about it!

  2. Millie needs a new, better home. It sounds like her owner is either too stupid to raise her or he just doesn't care about her. And as for Vose, I am glad he is charged, but I think the owner should have some responsibility too.

  3. Oh Millie! :-(

Me and Charlie pray and hope that Millie will not be returned to his ignorant "owner" ever. Poor Millie. We hope that the callous friend of said ignorant owner never handles animals ever again and that the full force of whatever law that exists there to prosecute such cruelty will be used in full.

We hope Millie will remain safe and cared for. What a brave doggie - we are so glad she barked for all she was worth when she was caged up! We are sending our bestest purrs to her!

    Take care

  5. I'm in favor of sticking Mr Vose in a tiny little cage and locking him in a cold, dark storage unit with no food or water and see if he still thinks it's a good idea.

  9. Hmmm....what if Millie had been a cat? A cat's meow is not as loud as a dog's bark....oooh no...I'm thinking terrible thoughts though fortunately Millie was saved. I vote to put put Mr Vose in a small cage with no food and water for several days. purrr.....meow!

  10. Thank you for voicing your opinions! I hope Millie is not allowed to go back to her owner too because I thought it was irresposible of him/her to choose this (I use the term loosely) "friend" to take care of this furry little baby, if you ask me. I hope justice will be served!

  11. How disgusting! People, and I use the term loosely, like this are only moments away from abusing/neglecting humans. I'm bothered that this is just a misdemeanor. I think the legal system needs to recognize there is something sick and depraved about people who will blatantly mistreat animals, and that it's indicative of future crimes against animals AND humanity.
Thank you for allowing me to rant

  12. I don't really think his punishment will amount to much of anything since it is a misdemeanor. Very sad. I know Millie will find a wonderful forever home and will be a winner out of this horrible situation.

  14. It sounds to us that whether or not money was involved, stupidity was the order of the day. It's not hard to imagine a scenario in which this guy agreed to take the dog and then got caught by his landlord immediately and so came up with this brilliant idea. Whether it's deliberate cruelty, reckless indifference or just a serious case of the stupids it's probably best if no one involved ever owns an animal again.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  16. I'm in favour of making the punishment fit the crime.
So that's 1.5 days in human time = 1.5 weeks in Millie time.
That's how long I'd put him in a small crate in a storage facility without food or water.
    He'd never do it again!

  17. What is WRONG with people?! I am continually shocked at stories like this of people being cruel to animals. I need to go hug my doggies now.
