My Handsome Little Man, Joust, Has Passed Away

Last night I received the devastatingly sad news that my handsome 10 year old handsome friend, Joust, was put to sleep on Saturday after hurting his back that day. When he was brought to the vet's office there was nothing he could do to save him.

When I met him for the first time six months ago his owner informed me that he suffered from Spondylitis which is a degenerative condition that causes extreme pain in the spinal vertebrae. The prominent symptom I witnessed was when JOust winced and whined when he woke up and as soon his "brother", Chalupa, he comforted him by licking Joust's face. The sympathy Chalupa showed to Joust was one of the sweetest acts I've ever witnessed.

He was misunderstood because of his breed, his mistrust of most people due to prior abuse, and his anxiety with dogs who weren't socialized but I understood him and

so didn't Daisy. As you can see, he enjoyed his company as much as I did.

He had me wrapped around his little paws to the point where I shared my yogurt on of the mornings when I stayed overnight with him.

At the start of every visit I would say, "How's my little handsome man?", and then I would kiss the top of his head and I would do the same before I said goodbye. Little did I know that Friday's goodbye kiss would be the last one I'd ever give him.

Honestly, I don't know how I'm going to face going to his home this Friday to see his chihuahua buddy, Chalupa, without him there, I really don't. This news is by far one of the saddest I've ever heard.

  1. We are so sorry April, it seems the bridge has gained three of our friends this weekend, he will be hurting no more and dancing with them all.

  3. Thank you, Stella Rose and Old Kitty for your comments. I have been crying off and on about this little man today. He had a big hold on my heart. I wish I had known that Friday was my last day to see him. I would've extended the visit and taken him for a last road trip to the high school campus that he loved so much.

  4. Oh Teacher's Pets! I am so sad today. Too many Furiends and Friends have passed on this week/weekend. I am simply heartbroken. I think I will find my Mommy and snuggle for a while. Hugs to you.
