4 Home Remedies to Remove Fleas From Your Home and Pets

No one likes to watch their pets scratch at fleas and no one wants to see our companions suffer endlessly so what's a pet owner to do? In my experience, the vacuum is my first plan of action, followed by the laundromat, and then flea preventative treatments but after all of those remedies are used repeatedly what is the next plan of action, I wondered?

For those who don't feel comfortable using chemically-filled pesticides or calling a pest control company to "bomb" the house, what are your alternative remedies?

Out of the hundreds of home remedies I've researched I've found 4 that are simple, inexpensive, and effective and they are:

Lemon

Wash your floor with a lemon solution to keep the fleas away. Combine the juice of four lemons (including the rinds) with two liters of water.

White Vinegar

Use the 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water mixture in your sprayer to treat your sofas, chairs and bedspread. Treat your fabrics twice weekly.

If you prefer, toss a 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the wash with the blankets or dog beds to clean the bedding and remove fleas.

Stash Earl Grey Tea
Some pet owners praise the flea repelling powers of Stash Earl Grey tea. Tear open a few tea bags and spread the contents on the carpet. Vacuum up the contents after a couple of days and you should see a reduction in flea activity.

Dawn Dishwashing Liquid

Add a few drops of the blue-colored Dawn dishwashing liquid to your dog’s bath. Shampoo your dog well and rinse thoroughly to prevent skin irritation.

Have you tried any of these remedies? If so, how effective were they? Are there other remedies you've tried that worked in your situation? Please share! I'd love to read all about them! Thank you!

  2. I recently found a flea on our indoor kitty and am in the process of researching the best way to get rid of them. I'd never heard of using stash tea---it's worth a try!

  3. I am a lucky pup I have never had fleas or even a tick. Which MOM thinks is amazing considering all the places I go.

  4. Interesting, the earl grey - which i expect is the *black* tea (not necc. earl grey). I live in Burundi (central Africa) and so your info. can be well put to use. Lemon - I do use citronella oil in water, in a spray can, as a mozzi repellant (for humans). Somewhere in my files I have a few others, will try to find them and send.
Thanks for the useful advice! :-)
