Raw Dog Bones: Something to Chew About

A client of mine recently asked me what type of chew toys are safe, cost effective, and delicious because her dog has been biting important items in her home while she is at work.

In my opinion, one of the best kept chew "toy" secrets out there is at your local grocery store. Raw leg bones can keep your dogs busy for hours and will not make much of a dent in your bank account. For $4.78 for three bones your dog's teeth will be strong and healthy and will also have fresh breath!

Even if your large dog seems more comfortable with small bones do not allow it because it is unsafe for them. In Daisy's case, she snuck a  client's small bone into her mouth and onto her jaw causing me to pay a hefty fee at the vet's office to have the bone removed)so please be careful!

Smaller cut marrow bones for small dog breeds are a bargain at $3.00 - $4.00 per package and will provide months of entertainment!

Store the bones in the freezer until they are given to your dog(s) to keep them fresh.

Remember, when bones are fresh they do not have an odor but they are definitely messy. For Daisy and for your dogs please have your dogs chew the bones while on a towel, in a crate, or on the kitchen floor and be sure to clean the areas thoroughly when your dogs are through chewing.

I hope this advice is helpful for those who are looking for a safe, economical way to keep your dogs entertained!

  2. They're my favorite! But mom puts them in the freezer before I get them all the time, because if she doesn't, I eat them too fast and get a belly ache. But, it's okay, they're still yummy frozen!!!

    1. I forgot about how fast Daisy and my clients chew those bones so that's another reason why the bones need to be frozen!

  3. Yep I am bone deprived for that very reason, they'd be all over the house hidden, needles to say after being buried in the garden. Have a fabulous Friday.

    1. I had a Basset hound client who hid her bones all over the house including underneath the cushions so it was always funny to find them months later!

  5. We have a problem with bones at our house... Floyd starts fights, and I mean PROPER FIGHTS to try and take mine, even if he has one of his own... The peeps don't know what the solution to that problem is...

  6. Dexter does have a large nylabone that he fusses over for a minute or two now and then. Other than that, raw bones are the only chews he gets. Weather permitting, I have him enjoy his weekly bone outside.

I will caution that leg bones of cows are the best for powerful chewers. I've tried other parts from other bovines and wound up taking them away because Dex was able to start actually biting off and swallowing large hunks of softer bones. When he was younger i tried rib bones until the day I recovered a four inch piece (yes, I measured) from his poop.
