The Presidential Election Has Gone to the Dogs at 'Total Pet Care' in Ohio

At Total Pet Care in Maumee, Ohio, the presidential election has gone to the dogs, quite literally.

The boarding and veterinary care facility   has set up a miniature voting booth for canines. Faces of both candidates are on mats on the floor and a treat is placed on each mat. The dog's vote is registered according to which treat it picks first. A sign near the voting area reads: "Let your dog's palate be the ballot."

Surprisingly, many dogs, such as the Yorkshire Terrier featured in the video above, pass up both treats and are registered as “undecided.”

Voting will continue through Election Day and clients of Total Pet Care can keep up with the polls on their Facebook page, Total Pet Care of Ohio, throughout the day.

The owner of every dog who votes receives a coupon for a free night of boarding which can be redeemable after Inauguration Day (January 20, 2013)because Dan Shook, the owner of Total Pet Care, believes that everybody will need a vacation by then.

“We're having a lot of fun with it, but there's also a very serious message,” said Mr. Shook, referring to a sign over the voting area that says “Every Dog Gone Vote Matters.” "We hope that all of our clients go to the polls and vote, no matter which candidate they choose."

  3. That is GREAT! MOM voted on Thursday and when she got back in the Blazer she gave me a treat. That's my kind of voting.

  4. I thought it was a very clever and fun way to involve pets in the election process! Dogs and cats are good judges of character so why not give them a chance to vote, right?

  5. I love how if they don't choose a treat, they are "undecided." So clever!

Seriously, though ... that is a great message. Please get out and vote, everyone!

  6. I wish there were treats for me to choose from when I went to the polls this morning because it might've made it easier for me to decide who to vote for! LOL
Yes, I love that if the dogs didn't snag a treat that they were considered "undecided" too! Very clever!
