Raising Our Dogs As Our Children

On her first visit to the Late Show, the First Lady says she considers her Portuguese water dog, Bo, to be
one of her children.
She then went on to tell David Letterman that her son has nothing but positive qualities by stating,

"Bo is wonderful. He is the smartest dog on the planet."

And when Letterman expressed doubts about Portuguese water dogs and their behavior, Obama gushed even further about her "son's" exemplary behavior by stating, "He's a very sweet dog. I'm not being biased. He's very well-mannered, he's very even-tempered," she said. "He has a very busy schedule, appearances. I'm thinking about getting him an agent."

I'm sure dog owners across the nation applauded the First Lady for boldly stating that she considers her dog as her son because many if not all dog owners heartily agree. In my opinion, dogs need the same care that we would provide for our children such as: doctors visits, daycare, kindergarten (yes, there are kindergartens for dogs too), play groups, food, and of course, exercise.

I've never had children but I can certainly relate to parents when they confess, "It's a lot of work to raise my children but they're worth it" because I have found it is very time consuming to raise my coon hound,Daisy, but at the end of the day I think the hard work is well worthwhile.

I'm sure all of my readers think it's a lot of work to raise their furry sons and daughters but they're worth it, right? Do you think of your dogs as sons or daughters or do you think of them as dogs and why?

  1. I was hoping you were going to point out how foolish this whole "fur baby" craze has become. Yes, I love my dog and take care of his every need, but at the end of the day... he's still a dog.

  2. All my cats are family! I'd go to hell and back for them as I would my family! Yay for Bo Obama!

  3. Of course, I think of Daisy as my dog but I also think of her as a family member because she gives me unconditional love every day. I also appreciate the fact that she has motivated me to get out of the house to meet people from all walks of life and has made me feel as if I am part of neighborhood.

  6. Our dogs are our family. I just wish there was a more suitable word that would fit their status as part of our family. We think of them as equals and to me calling them a pet doesn't do them any justice. And I think calling them a son or daughter should be left for humans.

Maybe we need a new word for the members our of family pack....

    Something to think about. :)

  8. Absolutely my two girls are my children. How could they not be? Haven't had any human kids yet, but my friends tell me that kids will be nothing compared to the level of care I give to Kitty and Coco. Love my girls!! The first Lady sure gained points with me on this one..

  10. I bet Daisy would love to have a play date with Bo Obama! If she were on the White House lawn she'd be digging holes, barking, and running wild and free!

  11. Well we know our human loves us loads but we are dogs and so we must remain.
It is true the human does have to provide care for us and she reckons more so than her kids who have now grown up. Still we think being a dog is an important business and much as we love our humans we really don't want to be one............or indeed two!

  12. I don't have human children, but I consider my dogs my children. Like human children, each has a different personality and temperament. Some are quicker to learn than others. They have good days and bad days and they can get into trouble and they can play tricks on us.

I'm glad I didn't see the show. I would have been more than annoyed at Letterman for suggesting that Porties are less than fabulous.
